Jason: Ward of the State is the inspiring story of Mary J. Peterson's commitment to and care of one of her students who became a ward of the state long after she had been his first grade teacher. She guided Jason as well as his brother, forging a bond that goes beyond blood ties. Her love and determined focus on the importance of education helped them survive the "System," attend college and become successful adults.

Mary J. Peterson taught in the Chicago
Public Schools for twenty-five years. She has a master's degree in Special Education from Roosevelt University. Mary is a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteer who works on behalf of abused and neglected children, staying on a case until a child is placed in a safe, permanent home.

With the publication of Jason: Ward of the State, Mary J. Peterson has become a nationally known speaker, travelling extensively throughout the United States. She has presented at various CASA Conferences in Texas, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, and at Northrop Grummun Corporation and Border's Book Store in Illinois.
